Google Ads for an MOT garage in Birmingham

The searches that book a car in, the ones GOV.UK answers instead, and how to count a booking

Which MOT and repair searches book a car into a Birmingham garage, which ones GOV.UK answers instead, the negatives that split them, and counting bookings.

Pay for the searches that ask for a garage: MOT near me, MOT and service in a named suburb, a named repair, a make you specialise in. Do not pay for the searches about MOTs, such as checking a car's history, finding the due date, setting a reminder or checking the Clean Air Zone, because GOV.UK answers each of them in a minute and none of them books a car in. The line between the two is one shared negative keyword list and a booking that is counted properly, and in a city with as many garages as Birmingham it decides whether the account pays.

Customers and lookups, side by side

The searchWho is typing itCustomer? What to do
mot near me, mot tyseley, mot erdingtonA driver with a due date, choosing a slotYesIts own ad group, a tight radius, the next free slot on the page
mot and service, full service and motA driver who wants both done in one visitYes, and usually the better jobIts own ad group and a page for the combined booking

check mot history, mot status, when is my mot dueA buyer checking a used car, or an owner checking a dateNoNegative: GOV.UK's MOT history check shows whether the car passed or failed, the mileage and when the next test is due
mot reminderAn owner who wants a nudgeNoNegative: GOV.UK sends free reminders by text or email a month before a car's MOT is due
mot cost, how much is an motA driver comparingSometimesKeep it only if the page shows your price; GOV.UK says there is a maximum a test station can charge, and the searcher may only be checking it

clean air zone check, pay caz chargeA driver checking a car or paying the chargeNoNegative: the government's own vehicle checker and payment service answer it

The first three rows are the account. The rest arrive because MOT is a short word that appears in a great many searches that have nothing to do with booking one, and because broad match, which Google's help says is the default match type for every new keyword, can show an ad on searches related to the keyword rather than containing it. A garage that typed mot birmingham without quotation marks or brackets is bidding on the government's lookups too.

The negative list for an MOT garage

One shared list, applied to every campaign, at phrase match, and grown weekly from the search terms report.

  • Lookups, written as phrases: mot history, mot status, mot check, mot due date, mot reminder, gov, dvsa. Not the single word check, which would also block brake check and pre-MOT check searches you want.
  • The trade: tester, testing course, training, jobs, apprenticeship, inspection manual, garage for sale, equipment.
  • The Clean Air Zone lookups: caz checker, pay caz, clean air zone charge, unless a separate campaign is built for the questions a garage can answer.
  • Free mot: a negative only if you do not offer one with a service. If you do, it is a customer search and belongs in its own ad group.
  • The West Midlands places outside your patch, which the negative keywords guide on this site lists by area.

The Clean Air Zone is two kinds of search

Birmingham City Council's Brum Breathes site says the Clean Air Zone covers the city centre inside the A4540 Middleway, but not the Middleway itself, and it started operating on 1 June 2021. It produces searches every week. Checking whether a car is compliant and paying the daily charge are done through the government's own service, and those searches book nothing. The questions a garage can answer, about what can be done for a particular car, are a different matter, and our automotive page describes the small campaign that takes them. Keep the two apart in the account, or the lookups will fill the campaign that was meant for the questions.

Book early: the line most MOT ads leave out

GOV.UK says you can get an MOT up to a month, minus a day, before it runs out and keep the same renewal date. That is the best line an MOT ad can carry, because it removes the reason to wait: book this week, keep your date. The government's reminder service writes to drivers a month before the test is due, so the person searching that week is exactly the person the line is for. Put it in a headline, put it on the page beside the next free slot, and a booking that would have waited a fortnight is made now.

Radius and suburb

Drivers rarely pass several garages to reach an MOT, so the MOT ad group runs on a tight radius or the postcode districts around the workshop, B11 and B27 for a garage in Tyseley, B23 and B24 for one in Erdington, with the location option set to people in the area rather than people interested in it. A repair a garage is known for, a make, a gearbox, air-conditioning, runs wider in its own ad group, because people drive further for a specialist.

Judge where the clicks came from in Google Ads, not in Google Analytics. When we looked at a tuning garage's paid traffic on 21 September 2026, GA4 put London top of its paid cities for a business nowhere near London, because GA4 takes the city from the IP address and phone networks route through a few gateways, so the radius is judged from the Locations report in Google Ads, by user location.

Counting a booking

  1. Calls from the call asset on the ad and from the tracked number on the page, counted when they last about a minute, so misdials do not teach the bidding to buy more of them.
  2. Online bookings counted on the confirmation, never on the booking page loading.
  3. Where the booking form belongs to a booking system on another address, a test booking made in a clean browser, to prove the conversion fires when a real booking completes. A tag on your own page cannot see what happens on someone else's.
  4. Direction requests and clicks on the location asset as secondary actions: worth reading, not worth bidding on.
  5. At month end, the job cards against the report: which calls and bookings became cars on the ramp, and what the work was worth.

The last step changes how an MOT campaign looks. Judged on the test fee alone it often looks poor, because the fee has a ceiling. Judged on the work booked after it, the advisories fixed, the service added, the tyres, the same campaign can be the best money in the account. Only the garage's own job cards can say which, and the call tracking guide on this site explains how the calls are counted before that sum is done.

The automotive page sets out how we run accounts for Birmingham garages, body shops and dealers, and the Google Ads management page covers the weekly work and the report. Send the workshop address through the quote form and the reply says what an MOT click costs there.

Follow-up questions

Should an MOT garage bid on MOT near me?

Yes. It is typed by a driver choosing a slot and it is won on distance, so run it on a tight radius, with the location option set to people in the area and the next free slot on the page.

Why does my ad show for check MOT history?

Because the keyword is broad match, or phrase match on the single word MOT. Add mot history, mot status and mot check as phrase negatives; GOV.UK answers those searches and they never book.

Can I put my MOT price in the ad?

Yes, if it is the price on the page the ad lands on. GOV.UK sets a maximum a test station can charge, so a price earns its place in the ad when it is below that or comes with something extra.

What should a garage count as a conversion?

Calls of about a minute or more from the ad and the page, and completed online bookings on their confirmation. Direction requests are secondary actions only. At month end the job cards say which became work.

Should a Birmingham garage bid on Clean Air Zone searches?

Not on the checker and payment searches, which the government's service answers. The questions about what can be done for a particular car are worth a small campaign of their own.

How wide should the radius be for MOTs?

Tight: the postcode districts around the workshop. A specialism such as a make or a gearbox repair runs wider in its own ad group, because people drive further for it.
