PPC course or PPC agency: which a Birmingham owner needs

What a day of Google Ads training teaches, what only a live account teaches, and what the second kind of lesson costs

A PPC course teaches Google Ads in a day; your live account teaches the rest at your expense. When training is right for a Birmingham owner, and when not.

Book a course if somebody in the business will open the Google Ads account every week for the next year, the account is small and local, and you want to understand the work rather than buy it. Hire an agency, or a person who runs accounts, when nobody has those weekly hours, or when the account already spends enough that a month of beginner's mistakes costs more than the management would. A day of training gives you the vocabulary and the screens; it cannot give you your own search terms, your own website's tracking, or the judgement that comes from reading the same report every Monday.

What a day of training can cover

Six or seven teaching hours are enough for the structure of an account (campaigns, ad groups, keywords and ads), the three match types, how a responsive search ad is put together, the location and network settings, the bid strategies by name, what a conversion action is and where the search terms report lives. That is a real foundation. An owner who has it reads an agency's monthly report differently from one who does not, and asks better questions of it.

Check the course against Google's current definitions, because a lot of training material is older than the product. Google's own help now says broad match is the default match type for every new keyword, that phrase match shows ads on searches that include the meaning of your keyword, and that exact match covers searches with the same meaning or the same intent. A trainer still teaching the plus sign of broad match modifier is teaching a notation Google folded into phrase match in 2021 and no longer accepts for new keywords.

Google's Skillshop covers much of the same ground. Its help pages say access to the platform, awards and most certifications are available at no cost, and that a certification is valid for one year from the date issued. A paid day earns its fee only by giving you what Skillshop cannot, which is your own account on the screen and somebody in the room to answer the question you did not know to ask.

What only a live account teaches

The rest is learnt by running an account, and every lesson in it is paid for in clicks. This is what a Birmingham owner learns in the first months, set against what a classroom can give, and what each lesson costs while it is being learnt.

The skillWhat a course gives youWhat your own account addsWhat learning it live costs
Reading search termsWhere the report is and how to add a negative keywordWhich searches in your patch buy; in a city with several universities and colleges, the jobs, courses and DIY questions arrive from the first daySpend on searches that could never have bought, until the negative lists catch up
Conversion trackingWhat a tag and a conversion action areWhether your own website delivers the hit when a real customer submits the formWeeks of bidding on missing or false conversions, with nothing on screen to say so
Location targetingThe difference between presence and presence or interestWhere your customers come from across a conurbation whose towns run into each otherClicks from Dudley or Coventry for a business that never goes there
BiddingThe strategy names and what each one optimises forWhen your account has enough real conversions to hand the bids to Smart BiddingPerformance that swings after every hurried change, because each one restarts the learning
AdsThe rules of a responsive search ad: up to 15 headlines and 4 descriptionsWhich claims your customers respond to, read from the combinations that winA slower test, paid for at full click prices
JudgementVery little; it is not taught in a roomWhen to change nothing, which is most weeksThe changes made because the account felt quiet

The bidding row is the one beginners underestimate. Google's help on Smart Bidding says a Learning status shows after major structural changes, such as a new strategy or keywords and ad groups added or removed, that it never lasts more than seven days, and that performance can take one to two conversion cycles to settle. An owner who edits the account every time it looks slow keeps it permanently unsettled, and no slide makes that feel real until it has happened in your own account.

The tracking row is the expensive one. On a Chester remapping business's site in October 2026 the Google Ads tag loaded and the quote form fired its conversion, but the site's Content Security Policy stopped the browser sending it, so the account recorded no leads and showed no error. A course cannot cover your own website's headers.

When a course is the right answer

  • You, or someone on the payroll, will open the account every week at a fixed time, and will still be doing it next winter. Without that hour, a course taken in March is forgotten by June.
  • The account is small enough for the course to cover all of it: one Search campaign, one service, one area, calls and a form as the goal.
  • You already pay an agency and want to read its report, its change history and its search terms yourself. That is the best use of a day's training we know of.
  • You are about to hire someone to run ads in-house and want to be able to interview them properly.
  • Your clicks are cheap enough that mistakes are cheap too. A café learning on its own account loses less while it learns than a solicitor does.

When it is not

A course is the wrong answer when nobody has the weekly hour, when the account runs Shopping, Performance Max or several branches, or when the sector carries rules about what an ad may say, as solicitors, finance and health do. It is also the wrong answer when the account already spends at a level where a month of waste would pay for the management several times over. In those cases the training still has value, as a way of supervising the work rather than doing it.

The first month for a beginner, in practice

Most of the money a beginner loses goes in ways that look normal on the screen. Keywords typed without brackets or quotation marks arrive as broad match, which Google's help describes as matching searches related to your keyword, not only searches containing it. Auto-applied recommendations, if they are switched on, can add keywords, add broad match keywords and remove negative keywords Google judges redundant; that is the list on Google's own help page for the setting. The search terms report gets opened in week three, not week one. None of that is a disaster on its own. Together it is a month of clicks that taught the account nothing useful, and the settings guide beside this one lists the defaults to check before the first day's spend.

The middle route most owners are never offered

There is a sensible path between doing all of it and paying for all of it. Take the training, Skillshop or a paid day, build the account yourself, run it for a month with the search terms read weekly, and then have someone who runs accounts read it. Our free Google Ads check does that for an account already spending: six findings in writing within 72 hours, read-only access, nothing changed. If the findings are small, carry on alone with a better list of what to watch. If they are large, the PPC audit is the full written version, and the management page explains how the work is done for you if you would rather hand it over.

Six questions to ask before booking any course

  1. Will I work in my own account on the day, or in a demonstration one?
  2. Is the material current: broad match as the default, no broad match modifier, responsive search ads only, and call ads replaced by call assets?
  3. Does it show how to prove conversion tracking with a real submission, rather than by looking for a tag in the page?
  4. Does it cover Performance Max and AI Max honestly, including what each one decides for you?
  5. Does the trainer run live accounts now?
  6. Can I send questions after the day, when the account does something the course did not cover?

If the answers point to doing it yourself, do it, and send the account for the free check after a month. If they point the other way, our Google Ads management page explains how we run Birmingham accounts week by week, and the quote form takes a minute.

Follow-up questions

Can I learn Google Ads in a day?

You can learn the screens, the vocabulary and the settings in a day. Running an account well is learnt over months of reading your own search terms and conversions, which no classroom has.

Is Google's own Google Ads training free?

Mostly. Google's Skillshop help says access to the platform, awards and most certifications are available at no cost, and each certification is valid for one year from the date issued.

Do I need a Google Ads certification to run my own ads?

No. A certification shows knowledge to an employer and counts towards an agency's Google Partner status; it does not change how your ads perform or what Google lets you run.

Is a course worth it if I already pay an agency?

Often more than if you do not. An owner who can read the search terms report and the change history can tell whether the account is being worked, and can question the monthly report properly.

How much time does running my own account take?

For one small Search campaign, plan on an hour a week at a fixed time: the search terms, the conversions and one decision. Less than that and the account drifts.

What should I do after the course?

Build the account, run it for a month with the search terms read weekly, then have it read by someone who runs accounts. Our free check does that for an account already spending.

Send the account ID. Within 72 hours you know where last month's money went.

The free check needs your ten-digit Google Ads customer ID and nothing else. Daniel Stoychev reads the account himself and writes back within 72 hours. If you would rather talk first, the phone is answered in office hours by the same person.
