PPC or SEO first for a Birmingham business
The honest sequencing, by situation
When a Birmingham business should start with Google Ads, when with search rankings, and when with both: the timelines, the situations, and the sum that decides.

Start with Google Ads when you need enquiries this month and can afford the clicks, and with search rankings when the phone can wait a few months and the searches are ones a map listing or a page can win for nothing. Most Birmingham businesses should do both eventually, in that order or the reverse depending on the situation, and the honest answer for some is rankings alone, because the click price in their sector exceeds the margin. This guide is written by a studio that sells both and would rather send you to the right one than to the one with the higher fee.
What each one is, in a sentence each
Google Ads buys a place at the top of the results for the searches you choose, from the day the campaign is approved, and stops the day you stop paying. Search rankings, meaning the map pack and the unpaid results, are earned over months by a Google Business Profile, pages that answer the searches, and the reviews and mentions that make Google trust the business; they cost time and a fee for the work, not a price per click, and they keep producing after the work stops.
The timelines side by side
| Google Ads | Search rankings | |
|---|---|---|
| Week one | Ads live, first clicks, first calls if the page is right | Profile fixed, pages planned, nothing visible yet |
| Month one | Waste being cut, tracking proved, first cost per enquiry | Profile in the map pack for the business name; first pages indexed |
| Month three | The first month worth judging; spend more, less or stop | Map pack positions for the main service in the home suburb; a trickle of clicks |
| Month six | A settled cost per enquiry, the schedule and radius tuned | Rankings for the main searches in the patch; enquiries that cost nothing per click |
| Month twelve | The same, at whatever budget the sum supports | Often the larger source of enquiries, and still there if the work pauses |
| If you stop paying | Enquiries stop the same day | Enquiries continue and fade slowly over a year or more |
Ads first: four situations
- A new business with a phone that needs to ring this month. Rankings take months and a new domain has no trust; ads work from the first day the tracking is proved.
- An emergency trade. The searches are made at 11pm on a phone by someone who rings the first result, and the first result is an ad. Rankings help, but the ad is where the emergency call comes from.
- A season or an event. Christmas for a shop, term start for a letting agent, a show week for a hotel near the NEC. Ads can be switched on for the window; rankings cannot be summoned for a fortnight.
- A test of a new service or a new area. Two months of ads tell you whether Solihull wants what you sell before you spend a year ranking for it.
Rankings first: four situations
- A shop or a restaurant whose customers search "near me". The map pack answers those and it is free; an ad above it competes with your own listing.
- A low-margin service in a sector where franchises bid hard. If the click price exceeds the margin at any realistic conversion rate, ads cannot pay, and the report should say so.
- A business already known in its suburb with reviews to show for it. It is close to the map pack already and the profile work gets it there faster than ads would pay.
- A tight budget with patience. A few hundred pounds a month buys more over a year in rankings work than in clicks, provided you can wait for the year.
Both, and in which order
For most Birmingham service businesses the sensible shape is ads first for the enquiries and the data, rankings alongside for the long term, and then the ads budget reduced as the rankings take over the searches that no longer need buying. The ads account is also the best research a rankings project can have: three months of search terms report shows exactly what people in your patch type, which is what the pages should be written to answer. The mistake is doing both on a budget that funds neither properly; better to do one well.
The sum that decides it
Take the cost of a click for your main searches, from Keyword Planner with Birmingham set, and divide it by the share of clicks that become an enquiry, one in twenty for a decent page. Compare the result, plus the management fee spread over the month's enquiries, with what an enquiry is worth to you. If the enquiry costs less than it is worth, ads pay, and the only question is how soon you need them. If it costs more, ads do not pay at any budget, and rankings are the answer whatever the timeline. That sum takes ten minutes and it is the whole decision.
The wrong reason to choose ads is that rankings are slow; the wrong reason to choose rankings is that ads cost money. The right reason for either is the sum above, and the situation you are in this month.
What we do when the answer is rankings
We say so in the reply to the quote form, and we point you at the studio that does that work, which is ours, under its own name. It would be easy to take three months of management fee from a business whose clicks cannot pay; it is also the fastest way to lose a client and deserve to. The fee model on this site is flat for a reason, and this is one of them.
Follow-up questions
Can a Birmingham business do both PPC and SEO at once?
Yes, when the budget funds both properly. Ads first for the enquiries and the search data, rankings alongside for the long term, and the ads budget reduced as the rankings take over.
How long does SEO take for a Birmingham business?
Map pack positions for the home suburb in around three months with the profile done properly; rankings for the main searches across the patch in six to twelve. Ads work from the first week.
Which is cheaper?
Per enquiry, rankings usually are over a year, because there is no price per click. Per month at the start, ads often are, because rankings work costs a fee before it produces anything. The sum in the guide decides it for your searches.
Does running ads help my rankings?
Not directly; Google says paid and organic are separate. Indirectly, yes: the search terms report tells you what to write pages about, and a fast landing page is the same page rankings need.
Will you tell me if ads are the wrong choice?
Yes, in the reply to the quote form, with the sum. A flat fee gives us no reason to run an account that cannot pay.
