A Birmingham question
Is Google Ads worth it for a Birmingham business?
It is worth it when a click for your searches, divided by the share of clicks that become an enquiry, costs less than an enquiry is worth to you after the management fee, and it is not worth it at any budget when that sum fails. For most Birmingham trades, solicitors, agents, garages and venues with a function room the sum works; for a low-margin service in a sector where franchises bid hard on every term, it often does not, and we say so.

The sum, with Birmingham numbers
Take an illustrative Sutton Coldfield boiler engineer, not a client. A click for "boiler repair Sutton Coldfield" costs around £3; one visit in fifteen rings, and one call in three becomes a job worth £250 in margin. An enquiry costs £45 in ad spend, a job costs £135, and the job is worth £250. It is worth it, with the management fee spread across the month's jobs still leaving room. Now take a service where the click costs £9, one visit in thirty converts, and the margin on a job is £120: the enquiry costs £270 and the sum fails at every budget. The sector, the page and the margin decide it, not the city.
Where it usually works in Birmingham
- Emergency trades, because the search is made on a phone at the moment of need and the first result is rung.
- Solicitors in the practice areas where a case is worth thousands: conveyancing, family, employment, probate.
- Estate and letting agents bidding on valuation and landlord searches rather than on property searches the portals own.
- Garages for MOT, servicing and a make they specialise in; dealers for used cars from a stock feed.
- Restaurants and venues for functions, private hire, Christmas parties and hotel rooms, where one booking is worth hundreds.
- Manufacturers and B2B firms, once lead quality is fed back into the bidding so it learns which enquiries were buyers.
Where it usually does not
A restaurant paying for "restaurants near me" on a Tuesday, when the map pack answers that for free and the booking sites are bidding on its own name. A shop that sells what every other shop sells at the same price, with no service or range worth naming. A low-margin service where the click price exceeds the margin at any conversion rate. And any business whose phone is not answered when the ads run, because a click to voicemail costs the same as a click to a job. In each case the money is better spent on the Google Business Profile, the reviews and the search rankings first.
What changes the answer
The page. A landing page that repeats the search, loads in under three seconds on a phone and puts the number in the first screen doubles the conversion rate of a homepage in most sectors, and halves the cost per enquiry with it. The searches: specific ones cost less and convert better than the generic term. And the waste: an account paying for jobs, courses and Wolverhampton is spending a third of its budget on clicks that could never buy, and removing them changes the sum before a single bid moves.
How to find out for your business in a week
If you already advertise, the free check reads last month's account and reports what the enquiries actually cost against the waste. If you do not, ten minutes in Keyword Planner with Birmingham set gives the click price, and the sum above does the rest. The reply to the quote form does the sum for you and says, in writing, whether ads are the right first spend or whether rankings are.

People then ask
- Is Google Ads worth it for a small business spending under £1,000?
- Often, where the clicks are cheap enough to buy a few hundred a month and the page converts. The Starter tier exists for exactly that band, and the sum decides it.
- How quickly will I know?
- The third month is the first worth judging: month one removes waste and proves tracking, month two feeds the bidding, month three gives a real cost per enquiry.
- What if the answer is no?
- Then we say so, with the sum, and point you at search rankings, which the studio also does. A flat fee gives us no reason to run an account that cannot pay.
